Input required: Code of conduct
Hi everyone.
Sad as it is, I think we need some kind of code of conduct for this space. It has become painfully clear that anonymity gives a certain type of person a false sense of power, which shows itself in spoiling tactics - not making any kind of contribution, just spewing acid everywhere.
I'm sure the older members know that I am not talking about the odd fight or mudslinging, that is as much part of the spirit of the place as writing is. I am also not talking about policing the place to death - you know this. It's simply a question of not letting the place go to the dogs because of one or two childish individuals.
So - help me put together some guidelines for protecting our space. Because it is our space. You're (mostly) a clever bunch - help me out here.

I know I'm new, but one of the reasons I joined was because of the lack of conduct guidlines. Yes I agree some people overstep the mark, but is that not what this is all about? Most of us are fairly nice people and know how far to take things.

I agree with the others (I think the others be Frankly and Arbie). I think you are doing a fine job. You have a good idea of what is 'good' and what is not. If you feel that someone is crossing the lines then just nuke them. I'm sure we won't even miss them and we may not even complain. I do not think that any of your decisions to date can be viewed as being unreasonable.
And I agree with Frankly again (God, what is happening to me), you should just put the obligatory comments in the terms and conditions of signing up. Stating that bloggers using hate-speech or this place for free advertising, etc will be burnt at the stake.
If all else fails, we just ignore them.

The problem is just that we can't really ask newbies to 'trust my gut'. They don't know me like you guys do. And its only fair that people know what the rules (yes i hate that word too) are before they sign up.
I just want some friggen input! Seems many people here would have no problem with some shitting, say - on the street in front of their house. That's a public place too, right?

That's the problem.... you cannot really go drawing up a set of rules for code of conduct on an open forum. Then that really will drive people away. Can you really govern how someone should behave on the internet or what they should say or who they should say it to? Remember, you are not going to be able to please all the people here, all of the time. Yes, some people do come here with a sole purpose and if, again, you do not approve then you just get rid of them.
Your disclaimer says that the owner takes no responsibility for anything written here ... that already is an indication that I can write whatever I want to.
This is a difficult one Adminguy and I would not want to be in your shoes. But in my opinion, it is something that cannot be governed by rules and policies.
And no, I would not want someone shitting on the road in front of my house but if it does happen because I cannot control it... I have two choices... ignore it and hope that it will eventually go away (which it will)... or I can get rid of it.

I don't know what the point of this essay is, but I'll say it again. I love it here. And I'll keep coming back. And I agree that putting some "guidelines" in the T&C section would be a nice warning to potential replicunts. But I genuinely believe that it'll only make us feel better when we say "I told you" and delete their ass. The pigs will come to play, whether we warn them or not. The only real power we have is the power in our choice to engage. Or not.

There is an infinite supply of sad losers out there who get a buzz out of making bad vibes and the very implementation of a policy or strategy or whatever will keep our paranoia going - is this another repli or not?? That in itself makes a bad vibe. The thing is that just like badly-behaved children or irritating people, these nasty, spoiler types thrive on attention and soon run out of steam when ignored.
I really think that we should let the process play itself out in an open forum rather than re-create another kind of lager mentality...

You KNOW I respect you as a writer and as a person chicka. I think you're groovy and you rock and all - but I cannot understand why you keep bringing up the 'Ricegirl' incident. I particularly cannot understand it when you have always been one of the people involved in requesting that Tonsilfuck be banned from here - which I totally support (having gleened some insight over time as to the real life story).
Can you not understand that at one time - Tonsilfuck was replicating himself like cheap Hong Kong suites and that Adminguy was merely trying to do exactly what a group of bloggers that he respects and likes wished him to do in the first place? It could not have been all that easy at that stage (or now, even) to identify which username was that arseholes and which one wasn't (or isn't). So he made a mistake - that's all it was. And he apologised.
I never wanted to reveal this but if it means that people here will better understand the motives behind the deletion of Barry - yes, it ended up being someone I knew in real life. He admitted to it. I asked Adminguy to squash him and I dealt with him in real life to ensure that he never returned.
