The Clarion Call
All ye bleeding hearts,
comfy in walled estates,
put your money where
your mouths are blabbering.
Adopt a refugee.
Even if they entered
the country not as such,
now they are indeed
truly refugees;
disowned and homeless souls,
displaced by so-called brothers,
from informal settlements,
the erstwhile squatter camps.
Whether you’re in Sandton,
Soweto or Cape Town,
open up your hearts
and your wallets too.
Invite a refugee,
into your sprawling mansions,
like Winnie in Orlando,
to score a point or two.
Don’t be outshined by Madonna,
campaigning in Malawi,
adopting needy children,
to revive her fading star.
Redeem yourself my brother.
Time is still on your side
Believers of the Man,
crucified on the cross,
heed the clarion call.
Remember what ol’e J.C. said:
whatever you do or don’t,
to these brethren of mine,
you are doing unto me,
be it good or bad,
and I’ll remember you,
and deal with you accordingly,
at the Pearly Gate,
of the Walled Estate,
high up in the clouds.
This is a promise,
not an idle threat,
so do what you know is right,
If you know what’s good for you.

As my grandfather used to say, "Sometimes the rainbird sings even if it isn't going to rain"
Spoegs
Hmmm...
Interestingly enough, a lot of people have taken in refugees - but they don't make it into the paper like Winnie and Madonna. Nor would they want to. And many of them are not in the upper income group. I also hope that hundreds of super earners in Jozi etc are taking in refugees.
This whole sick situation reminded me of when I was a very little girl - how my stepmom and many apolitical and ordinary women like her would go to extraordinary lengths to hide and protect the people that worked for them from the police. It made me also think of the few brave Germans that hid Jews from the Gestapo - no-one ever had to tell us to act when we saw the cops coming - even as little kids we would run home fast and warn everyone. What a weird world.
