Violence and the peculiar South African form of rape.
My blog yesterday spawned an interesting debate about rape. Unfortunately false accusations occur in the criminal justice system and because there is a massive backlog, these cases do not get optimised that fast and if the falsely accused gets justice it takes years.
This is something the media is yet to get onto and it would make for compelling reading although there are people who claim that it would detract from the harsh reality of rape.
South Africans have taken the act of rape to levels hitherto unknown on this planet. We have in our midst people who think it is alright to have sex with an 8 month old baby, to have unconsensual sex with a 78 year old woman and to have sex with a woman while her husband is tied up and the household contents are being relocated.
As a guy who has always been fond of consensual sex I struggle to work my mind around that kind of decisionmaking process. In fact, a perpetrator of rape has placed themselves immediately off the radar screen. How does one come back from that kind of act of brutal cowardice?
As a human being on this planet we all get to make decisions at every step and to decide in an apparently logical way to rape a woman places a person into a category of unwanted humanbeings.
As for those that make false accusations and the guys that get to spend time behind bars as rape accused well those women are fueling the fire and giving a certain justification to the rapists. What a mess South Africa is in with violent crime.

Dreaded Outsider and Medusajane
I have to say that I am speaking of 'rape' stats amongst the more financially advantaged female, adult populace. What IS rife is "DATE" rape claims amongst this population group in South Africa. And as I have said before, I find it very difficult to believe that there are many other 'rape' claims amongst this population group - reported or unreported. And if there are, they are hardly what I would consider 'rape'!
I mean, if we take the women on this blog as a 'sample' of this group - seriously, where are the 'chilling stories'? You, your family, your friends?
And I again stress - I am not talking about child molestation or physical abuse of women by spouses here.
None? I thought as much.
issues
why must it be a "chilling" story, told to you personally?
why do you focus so narrowly on date rape?
i can't help thinking you have some kind of agenda. the situation described yesterday, where a drunken man forces himself on a woman, is not called "a misunderstanding", as you would have it. It's called rape.
it's remarkably hard to prosecute successfully, as it amounts to his word against her's. I would suggest that you stay away from such a situation in future.
issues
Yes! I have issues with women claiming rape! My brother's reputation was almost destroyed by some bitch because of it. A friend of mine was suspended from campus for months because of some drunken ex speaking shit!
I want hear from someone who has been 'raped'! I want to see if their life was stuffed up as much as the victims of false accusations!
I do have issues with this - yes I do!
DO - "rife"
I'd be interested to know where you draw your info from, regarding "Unfortunately false accusations are quite rife in the criminal justice system ".
Please elucidate. I'd like to know.
mj, apologies wrong word I was in too much of a hurry but
it happens. There was a guy in Pretoria a while back who succeeded with a case brought against a woman for wrongful charges being laid. The problem with it all is he had to try and pick up his life from scratch. Wife, business, friends and all he had before gone as well as a lengthy time behind bars awaiting trial. It's a treacherous debate as rape is such a blight on our landscape and there's a dearth of implementable solutions. I take back rife and add occur.
"Unfortunately false accusations occur in the criminal justice system ".
no problem, DO
I thought for a mnute there that I was misinformed.
My impression is that the majority of rapes are happening to poor black women. Here's a quote from Gugu, my friend who lives in Orange Farm: "We live in fear. We pray to God every day".
There is also a great deal of abuse of children, by parents, stepparents and teachers.
While we are all patting ourselves on the back for being so much better off than our Zim neighbours, we have very high levels of ongoing crime to which we have become inured.
On the question of rape, I feel that men are very quick to jump to the "falsely accused" thought - but I am sure that 999 cases out of a hundred do not involve the vengeful woman and the false accusation.
