BTA/Anglo Platinum Short Story Competition 2008

  • Due Date: Friday 30 May
  • Genre: short story (Stories that bring out some emotion while making aspects of South Africa come alive have proven popular with judges.)
  • Number of words: between 4500 and 5000
  • Challenger: Dusty
  • Ok so the due date is actually 30 June but if we make our deadline earlier, it gives us a month after that to iron out the bumps, take each other’s comments into account, get our asses down to the post-office and so on…

Please refer to Dusty's Blog for all competition rules and details.

    okay.

I think everyone's seen this now...

    Well, I'm fuckin' in.

In. Like those sardines. No, that's a kak example.
In like my nuts were inside my body on my first serious surfing outing.
    Small wetsuits.
    In.

    Ah ha

    Ramona. *Cackle*

    Silly boy.

As for 4500 words. I just bust my balls writing two articles for work; one was 2000, the other 1,700. And I'm wrote out. Kaput. Done. No more writing for a bit. Eina.

    Ja Dolce

Noticed you were AWOL today. Thought you'd taken a bit of extra time at the farm or summat.

    Ob.vee.us.ly.not.

    Ja Dusts

balls to the wall. Not. Comfortable.

But yay. I can multitask at home now. and the internet is so slothlike, I can make dinner between comments.

    Eish.

    I must be addicted.

Have you got the post-closing night blues?

    YAY! Dolce can BUI!

    albeit s-l-o-w-l-y.

More like post-closing-night-relief. Can reply to three-week old emails which say things like: "Can I drop stuff off at your house tomorrow?"

    BUI

Just a pity I had no "i" in the house with which to blog under....

    sheesh....so loooong

    no topic :(

    too difficult.

and....I'll bet it has to harp on multi-cultural shit...crossing

the colour boundary and all of that...or be steeped in poverty and township violence...be painted shades of ocre and stinkwood...and be proudly (tragically) South African...right?

    *yawn*

    Yup Arb

    got it in one!

So, is yours going to be about the domestic worker who was abused with a spatula?

    emjay

You mean 'letters' don't you? Sure you do. Between 4500 and 5000 letters.

    No problemo. Phew.

    nope dex

    words...
i must say i did think about you when i saw the count!
you can do it big boy, i know you can...

    Words

I have just 'done' at a book for the firm, 60 pages (A5 size) 19,998 words of medical writing and it took about four months to write in collaboration with a couple of others. Ten hours to spell-check and remove all those silly extra spaces that have crept in when I was not looking. It is away at the compositors now so all I have to do is the indexes and spell check again and it can go to the printers.
So no more writing for me for a while.

    Of course Dex

and it includes spaces and punctuation.

Not to worry, you and a few others here will nail it.

Good luck to all your guys.

Ha ha ha. Rather you than me

    5000 words

Holy carumba, that's a lot of words.

    'strue Franks

About the same length as mj's 'Third Door'. What's the longest piece you've written before?

    Dusty

I have gotten half way through a novel which is about 20 000 words, but the longer it got the shittier it got. I've done that a few times I'm afraid.

    Jislaaik Franks

What makes you lose momentum? Interruptions? 20 000 is a hell of a lot of words to 'waste'

    admindude

please put this in pride of place for a day or two?
    *smooch*
