"It is bayonet rule against the rule established by the ballot"

The following piece about mining in Colorado in 1904 might as well have been written about Platinum mining in Limpopo in 2008:
"The astounding situation here in Colorado is that... the higher authorities, using th military arm of their government, are devoting practically all their attention to putting down the law. The prime insurrectionist... against regularly established laws are the governor and his soldiers... representative of... the mining and smelting interests of Colorado. It is bayonet rule against the rule established by the ballot." Henry George Jr. in the New York American of Jun 12, 1904.
More things change on this planet the more they remain the same.

Herewith the information about the museum requested. I did not know which department you need.

*poof*

Sjoe...

Thanks, David...it's the Documents and manuscrip and Military departments I'm after. You went to an awful lot of trouble. I'll let you know whether I'm successful. keep your finger crossed. It's like the proverbial needle in a haystack...maar as jy nie 'n klip innie bos gooi nit sal jy nooit weet wat daar versteek is nie....

That is right sister

You might just hit a couple of birdies, or a couple in an embarrassing, compromising situation.

Paranoia... Nos -

have you copied these details? I'd like to remove them - lots of personal info there.

Adminguy

Aaaand...GO!! got it.

Adminguy

David

or to put it another way...Same shit, different day.....

Same shit, different day, different bayonet.

What never makes the news in South Africa are poor rural communities and farmers being pushed off their land by mining companies. If a horde of black people should invade a white farm the media would kill to report on the incident. If a big mining corporation invades the land of a white farmer - why it is not news worthy. Less so if the mining company invades the land of a poor rural traditional community even less so.

Are we back on the battlefields of France?

Are you still working on the same battles we discussed previously.

Arras

No, that search is complete. I'll mail you a precis of my findings. it is now the 2nd Anglo Boer war.

2nd Anglo Boer War South African War?

You must read Christoffel Coetzee's novel Op soek na generaal Mannetjies Mentz. The book while a fictional novel set against the backdrop of the war gives a very fresh perspective on the whole conflict.

David

Check your mail.

Ill try

to get hold of it. Researching this makes me sad to the point of tears....the family lived on a farm in the Western TVL in the late 1800's early 1900's having their share of the "Scorched earth" nightmare. They were traders so hopefully some documents survived.

David

this is a feeble comment on your profound blog but nothing ever really changes, in the grand scheme of things...sorry I can't be more intellegent tonight.

The abnormal becomes normal

and evil flourishes where good people remain silent. Saw your petition for the scorpions - good for you, you show some activism!

David

When I was growing up, I never saw a dead body, never had anything stolen, never lost a friend, was never mugged, was never molested, was never vistimised...these are all things our kids face on a daily basis. God knows what long term effects these things have on our kids...they are forced to "grow up' so fast....I'm still not "grown up". I hope I never do.

Crime

The neighbour's house on the left was burgled in December. The neighbour on the right was burgled yesterday in broad daylight. I walk to to the corner Portuguese Cafe around the corner. I see the kids banging on a side gate where the pusher lives. We all know he is there, we all know that he is feeding the kids drugs. We know that the police also know because we have seen them there also.

In our little neo-liberal paradise safety and security is not a right but a commodity, it is something that you and your kids will enjoy only if you can afford to pay for it. Ordinary citizens are left at the mercy of criminals unless they can afford the commodity. Same goes for health, education, transport, housing etc. etc. The cops realise that the seurity companies are selling the commodity that they have to offer at very low ages to the rest of us who cannot afford the commodity - hence they put two and two together which means that they realise that they also can make money from safety and security. So they take money in bribes from us as well as from the criminals - therefore they have no reason to fight crime because sustaining current levels of crime allows them to also benefit from the situation and have a little taste of he better life.

David

*deep sigh*...
