Pan and I watched two very good DVD movies last weekend that Id like to recommend to my fellow bloggers.

Against the advice of the children manning the counter at our local DVD store, I hired Michael Clayton starring George Clooney. Warned that other customers had found the movie boring, I chose to trust in the write ups in the Sunday Times Magazine that had given this drama the thumbs up and was definitely not disappointed.

Granted, I dont imagine that many viewers under the age of 20 would relate to its message of corporate greed and the lack of scruples that invariably comes with the pursuit of money and power at all costs, but we found that the plot with its moral ambiguities and tough questions particularly pertinent in this day and age. Clooney is charmingly suave in his role as a fixer within a large legal firm and the supporting cast, particularly English actor Tom Wilkinson and Tilda Swinton, make a significant contribution to a well acted and suspenseful film.

We also snatched Gone Baby Gone off the shelf as soon as it was available. Based on a novel by Denis Lehane and directed by Ben Affleck (his debut as a director), the action takes place in downtown Boston around the kidnapping of a 4-year old girl. Casey Affleck plays a PI with an intimate knowledge of the neighbourhood. He and his business partner/girlfriend (Michelle Monaghan) are hired by the family to investigate. Working closely with two police detectives, the further they dig into the sordid details around the case, the more complex it becomes. I am reluctant to give away much more as this is not a movie that can be summed up by the storyline alone but plays to the viewers own sense of right and wrong (Pan and I had a major debate about the ending). I have never rated Ben Affleck as much of an actor, but having seen what he can do behind the cameras - in his interpretation of the story and the grittily realistic background he brings to light perhaps theres more to him than I initially thought.

If you're keen to spend some time in front of the tube this weekend...

Loved "Michael Clayton" and Clooney was so amazing in that movie.

Have you seen "Eastern Promises" with Viggo Mortensen. Very violent, but awesome. Also really cool to get a sight into the Russian mafia. The Vincent Cassel gives a monster performance in this movie.

Franks

Yes, I forgot to mention Eastern Promises. We watched it the same same weekend. Thought it was very good. Brutal and shocking in many respects, but extremely well acted by all concerned.

Gawd

my mate worked on that film and I STILL haven't seen it!

Is it very violent.

Dolla

Its not really blood and guts kind of violent. More of a calculated and efficient brutality. Its well worth seeing.

Mmm, Lily.

I hate both George and Ben. I'll skip.
But a good movie is 'The Witnesses' (French).
No 'One of the best movies of the year' or 'Two thumbs up!' on the cover, at least.

Also check out:
'The Chorus' (French)
'Old Boy' (Kor)
'Battle Royale' (Jap)
'Death Note I & II' (Jap)
'Together' (Chi)
'The Audition' (Jap) - my all time favourite.

Ramon

Can't get much in the way of foreign films in East London, unfortunately. We're forced to watch mostly mainstream movies with the odd "art movie" that may have made an impression on the general viewing public!

That sucks, Lily.

Check out these if you haven't seen them:

Savages (Phillip Seymore Hoffman is brilliant)
The Kite Runners
No Country for Old Men

Savages

I agree - Savages was great, as was Kite Runner. Would be interested to see Michael Clayton (for a change, if mainstream can be a change) and also No Country for Old Men, since Coen brothers are usually funny and refreshing (or at least disturbing in a good way).

Affleck, Lily

geez that oke is painful to watch. He could hardly be worse when he's behind the cameras. Thanks, will look out for these.

p.s. how many boobs in total are in these movies and what are the times when they appear, thanks.

yoh...I have to agree

Old Ben is painful to watch....aiy yai yai....*YAWN*.

Arbs

His brother Casey has a certain something that Ben lacks...not sure quite how to define it though!?

Hmm, Dex

No boobs that I can recall, unfortunately. Sorry!

Pah!

then, i'm afraid, it's just not quality entertainment.

Picky, picky!

I'm going to pretend I didn't read that comment, uber-Philistine!

pfffft Lily

the industry exists solely because of boobs, or the promise of boobs. That's a scientific fact. And a physical one, too.

Dex

Such a farce! Have you ever noticed that even the female competitors in shows such as Amazing Race have had boob jobs. I really don't get it!

Lily

It's to help them in the hitch-hiking department, silly ;)

Ah Dex

That must be the explanation! Thanks for clearing that up for me ;-)

Lily -

I'm pretty sure I can explain almost anything. Go ahead, try me.

ooooooh...nice font to the left over there

seems like your typewriter ribbon needs changing though...the 'g's are coming out a little smudged like...

PS: No need to thank me - I like to be helpful and stuff (help my fellow man....grrrrrrr)

ja arb

everything needs to be re-done! including that new one. time time time.

well! you know what they say! No time like the present
